Who Will Reach the Bottom First?

Have you ever looked at a playground slide and wondered how fast you could go?

In this image, we can see four people sitting at the top of four different slides.

They are labeled 1, 2, 3, and 4.

At the bottom of each slide, there is a finish flag.

The question is simple: which person will reach the bottom first?

To find the correct answer, we need to look closely at the shape of each slide.

Let’s examine how the shape of a slide affects the time it takes to reach the bottom.

First, let’s look at person number 3.

Slide number 3 has a very zigzag, sharp-angled shape.

The person will have to go through many sharp, tight corners.

Every time they hit a corner, they will lose a lot of speed.

The friction and the sudden changes in direction will slow them down significantly.

So, person 3 will definitely be very slow.

Next, let’s look at person number 2.

Slide number 2 is wavy and has many curves.

While it does not have sharp corners like slide 3, it still has many ups and downs and turns.

These curves will cause the person to change direction constantly.

This constant bending will create more friction and slow them down.

Therefore, person 2 is also not the fastest.

Now, let’s compare the last two: person 1 and person 4.

Both of these slides look much straighter than the others.

But if you look very closely, they are not exactly the same.

Slide number 1 is a straight, steep incline from the very top to the bottom.

It is a direct line, which means it has a constant, fast speed.

However, let’s look at slide number 4.

Slide number 4 starts with a very steep, almost vertical drop at the top.

In physics, a steeper drop at the beginning allows gravity to pull you down much faster, much earlier.

This gives the rider a massive, rapid boost of speed right at the start.

By the time the slide begins to curve gently at the bottom, the person has already gained maximum speed.

This phenomenon is actually a famous physics concept called the brachistochrone curve.

A curve that starts very steep and then flattens out actually allows an object to reach the end faster than a straight line.

The extra speed gained at the start on slide 4 more than makes up for the slight curve at the end.

Therefore, because of the rapid acceleration at the very beginning, person 4 will reach the bottom first.

So, the logical and correct answer is person number 4!
