Can You Spot All the Fruits?
At first glance, this looks like a pretty easy counting game.
You see a bunch of colorful foods, and the question seems simple: How many fruits are in the picture?

But there is a little trick hiding in plain sight.
Some of the foods look exactly like the kind of things we would casually call vegetables.
And that is where this puzzle gets interesting.
If you simply count everything that looks sweet, juicy, or colorful, you might get the wrong answer.
To solve it properly, we need to look at what each food actually is.
Let’s start with the bananas.
Bananas are fruits, so these are an easy one to count.
Next comes the dragon fruit.
It grows from the flower of the plant and contains seeds, so there is no question here either.
The red bell pepper might make you pause.
Most people think of peppers as vegetables because we usually use them in salads, stir-fries, and savory dishes.
But botanically speaking, a bell pepper is a fruit.
That is because it develops from the flower of the pepper plant and contains seeds.
So yes, the pepper counts.
Now look at the watermelon.
This one is much less confusing.
Watermelon is a fruit, and it is definitely staying on our list.
Then we have the raspberry.
Another fruit.

And finally, we have the carrots.
Carrots are definitely not fruits.

There is also one more interesting item: the green coconut.
Coconuts are fruits, botanically speaking.
More specifically, they are a type of fruit called a drupe.
So the coconut counts as well.
Now let’s put everything together.
We have the banana, dragon fruit, bell pepper, watermelon, raspberry, tomato, and coconut.
That gives us seven fruits.
The peanuts and carrots are the two that do not count.
And that is the little trick behind this puzzle.
It is not really testing how quickly you can count.
It is testing whether you know the difference between culinary categories and botanical categories.
In everyday life, we often call tomatoes, peppers, and other savory foods “vegetables” because of how we eat them.
Botanically, however, the classification works differently.
A fruit generally develops from the flower of a plant and contains seeds.
A vegetable, in everyday cooking, is simply a much broader category that can include roots, stems, leaves, and other edible parts of plants.
So the next time someone confidently says, “Tomatoes are vegetables,” you can give them a little smile.
In the kitchen, they absolutely can be treated as vegetables.
But in botany, they are fruits.
