At first glance, this little puzzle looks almost too easy.
You see a bunch of creatures swimming around, and the question seems simple: “How many fish do you see?”

So, naturally, you start counting.
One… two… three… four…
Then you notice the dolphin. The shark. The whale. The jellyfish.
Wait a minute.
Are all of them actually fish?
This is where the puzzle gets a little sneaky.
Before we reveal the answer, let’s slow down and take a closer look at each animal. You don’t need to be a marine biologist to solve it. You just need to remember one important thing:
Looking like a fish doesn’t necessarily mean being a fish.
Let’s start with the easy ones.
At the top, we have a tuna. Definitely a fish. Tuna breathe through gills and live their entire lives in water.
Next to it is a colorful betta fish. Another fish.
And beside the betta is a clownfish, the famous orange-and-white fish that many people recognize from movies and aquariums.
So far, we have three fish.
Now move down to the middle row.
There’s an orange goldfish. No surprise here—it’s a fish.
Then we have a shark. And yes, sharks are fish too!
This is one that sometimes causes confusion. Sharks may look very different from familiar fish, but biologically, they belong to the group of fish. They breathe through gills and have skeletons made mostly of cartilage rather than bone.
That brings our total to five fish.
Finally, look at the fish in the bottom-right corner. It is another ordinary bony fish, so we can add one more.
Five plus one gives us…
Six fish!
But now comes the fun part.
What about the animals that look like they should count?
Let’s start with the dolphin.
It swims like a fish. It has fins. It lives in the ocean. It even has a body shape that looks perfectly designed for swimming.
But a dolphin is not a fish.
It is a mammal.
Dolphins breathe air with lungs, not through gills, and they give birth to live young. They also feed their babies milk. So even though they spend almost their entire lives in the water, dolphins belong to the mammal family.
And then there’s the whale.
Whales are also mammals, not fish. Just like dolphins, they breathe air with lungs and must come to the surface to breathe.
So the whale doesn’t count either.
Finally, we have the jellyfish.
This one might be the biggest trap of all. Its name literally contains the word “fish,” but a jellyfish is not a fish. In fact, jellyfish are invertebrates, meaning they do not have a backbone.
So despite the name, the jellyfish stays out of our fish count.
And that is the trick behind the puzzle.
If you simply count every creature that swims, you might get a much higher number. But the question isn’t asking how many animals are swimming around.
It asks:
How many fish do you see?
Once we separate the true fish from the mammals and the jellyfish, the answer becomes clear:
The correct answer is 6 fish.
So if you got six, congratulations—you spotted the trick!
And if you counted the dolphin or whale as fish, don’t worry. You’re definitely not alone. Their appearance and lifestyle make them surprisingly easy to classify incorrectly.
The next time you see something swimming in the ocean, remember: “Lives in water” and “is a fish” are two very different things!
