At first glance, this looks like a very easy puzzle. There is a plate full of bright red tomatoes, and all you have to do is count them. Simple, right?
Well, not quite!

The tomatoes are packed closely together, with some sitting in front of others. Their similar shapes and colors can make your eyes work a little harder than expected. You may count a few quickly, feel confident about your answer, and then suddenly wonder, “Wait… did I miss one?”
That is exactly what makes this kind of visual puzzle so much fun.
Take a moment before reading further and look carefully at the picture. Try counting the tomatoes one by one rather than simply guessing the total. You might find it helpful to start at the top of the plate and move around it in a circle. This can make it easier to keep track of which tomatoes you have already counted.
Why can a simple picture be confusing?
Our eyes do not always process a busy picture in the same way. When several objects have almost the same color, size, and shape, the brain can group them together. Instead of seeing every tomato as a separate object, you may see a large group of red shapes.
The position of the tomatoes can also cause confusion. Some are partly hidden behind others, while some appear to overlap. A tomato near the edge of the plate can be easy to overlook, especially if you are counting quickly.
There is another common problem, too: losing your place while counting.
You might start with the tomatoes at the top, move toward the middle, and then accidentally count one twice. Or you may skip one because your eyes jump from one tomato to another.
So if you got 12 or 13, don’t worry! That does not necessarily mean you have poor eyesight. It simply shows how easy it is for a crowded image to trick your attention.
Try counting them again
Look at the picture one more time.
Start with the tomato at the very top. Then slowly move from left to right. Continue downward through the middle and finally check the tomatoes near the bottom of the plate.
Don’t rush.
Sometimes the difference between a wrong answer and the correct answer is simply taking a few extra seconds to look at the areas you initially ignored.
And if you already have an answer in your head, don’t change it just because you think the puzzle is trying to trick you. Trust your observation—but check your count carefully!
So, how many tomatoes are there?
If you counted 12, you may have missed a tomato hiding among the others.
If you counted 13, you were very close and probably spotted almost everything.
But there is one more tomato waiting to be included.
The correct answer is 14 tomatoes!
Yes, there are 14 tomatoes on the plate.
Did you get 14 on your first try, or did the tomatoes manage to fool your eyes? Either way, this little challenge is a great reminder that slowing down and paying attention can make a surprisingly big difference.
