How Many Fruits Are in This Picture?

At first glance, this looks like a very easy counting puzzle. You can quickly spot an orange, an apple, and a strawberry, so you might think the answer is only three. But then you notice the tomato, the green pepper, and the eggplant. Wait a minute—are those fruits too?

That is where this little picture gets tricky.

The puzzle is not really testing how quickly you can count. It is testing whether you know the difference between how we use foods in everyday life and how scientists classify them. So before you choose your answer, take a closer look at every item in the picture.

Let’s go through them one by one.

First, we have the orange. This one is probably the easiest. We normally call an orange a fruit, and botanically, it is a fruit too. It develops from the flower of the orange tree and contains seeds. So there is no trick here. The orange definitely counts.

Next is the apple. An apple is also a fruit. It grows from a flower and develops around the seeds of the apple tree. Interestingly, apples are considered accessory fruits because some of the edible part develops from tissue around the flower, not just the ovary. But for this puzzle, it is clearly a fruit.

Now look at the strawberry. Most people would immediately call it a fruit, and that is perfectly reasonable. Botanically, strawberries are a little unusual. The red fleshy part is not formed entirely from the ovary of the flower. The tiny spots on the outside are actually individual fruits called achenes. So strawberries are fruits, although they are not berries in the strict botanical sense.

Then we come to the tomato. This is where many people hesitate. In the kitchen, tomatoes are usually treated like vegetables because we use them in salads, sauces, soups, and savory dishes. But botanically, a tomato is a fruit. It develops from the flower of the tomato plant and contains seeds.

The green pepper, or bell pepper, creates the same kind of confusion. You might put it in a vegetable stir-fry or a salad and never think twice about it. But botanically, a pepper is a fruit because it develops from the flower and contains seeds. In fact, peppers belong to the same botanical fruit category as tomatoes.

Finally, we have the eggplant. It may look completely different from an orange or apple, but it is also a botanical fruit. Like tomatoes and peppers, eggplants develop from the flower of the plant and contain seeds. In everyday cooking, we usually call eggplant a vegetable, but scientifically, it is a fruit.

So why does this puzzle feel so confusing?

The answer is that “fruit” can mean two different things depending on the context. In everyday cooking, we often separate foods into fruits and vegetables based on taste and how we use them. Sweet foods such as apples, oranges, and strawberries are usually called fruits, while tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants are commonly treated as vegetables.

Botany uses a different rule. A fruit is generally the mature structure that develops from a flowering plant’s ovary after fertilization, often containing seeds. Using that definition, several foods we casually call vegetables are actually fruits.

So, if you counted only the foods that we normally think of as fruits, you might choose three.

But if the question is asking for the scientifically correct botanical answer, you need to count the tomato, pepper, and eggplant too.

The correct answer is: 6 fruits.

The fun part is that you probably knew all six foods already—you just had to look at them from a different point of view!
