You’re Stuck In Traffic. What Do You Do First?

Being stuck in traffic is one of those little everyday situations that can reveal a surprising amount about us.

You can be perfectly calm when you leave home, but give you a red light, a line of cars that isn’t moving, and someone who refuses to use their turn signal… and suddenly, a completely different version of you appears.

So, what do you do first when you’re stuck in traffic?

Your answer isn’t a scientific personality diagnosis, of course. But the way we naturally respond to small frustrations can give us some interesting clues about how we handle stress, boredom, emotions, and our own thoughts.

1. Playlist ON

If your first instinct is to turn up the music, you’re probably pretty good at changing your environment instead of fighting it.

You know the traffic isn’t going anywhere, so why waste your energy being angry about something you can’t control?

Music is also a simple way to shift your mood. A favorite song can make an unpleasant situation feel more comfortable, and many people naturally use music to regulate their emotions.

You may be the type of person who thinks, “Well, I can’t change the traffic, but I can make this hour more enjoyable.”

That’s actually a pretty useful mindset.

2. Rage silently

You don’t necessarily yell. You don’t necessarily honk.

You just… feel everything.

The slow driver. The red light. The person changing lanes at the last second. The mysterious car that’s been sitting there for five minutes without moving.

If this is you, you may have a stronger emotional reaction to frustrating situations, even when you keep it inside.

The interesting part is that you’re probably not an angry person all the time. You may simply have a low tolerance for situations where you feel stuck, powerless, or unable to control what’s happening.

And honestly, we’ve all been there.

3. Story time

If traffic becomes your chance to catch up on stories, messages, or what’s happening in everyone’s life, you’re probably someone who turns waiting time into social time.

Instead of thinking, “I’m wasting 30 minutes,” you find something interesting to fill the space.

You may enjoy connection, conversation, and knowing what’s going on around you. Boredom doesn’t necessarily bother you much when there’s something—or someone—to engage with.

You’re basically saying, “If I’m going to be stuck here anyway, I might as well make the time count.”

4. Talk to yourself

If your first reaction is to start thinking out loud—or having an entire conversation in your head—you may have a naturally reflective and imaginative mind.

Self-talk is surprisingly normal. People often use it to organize thoughts, solve problems, rehearse conversations, calm themselves down, or simply entertain themselves.

You might replay something that happened earlier, plan your evening, imagine a conversation that hasn’t happened yet, or suddenly solve a problem you’ve been thinking about all week.

Traffic isn’t just traffic for you.

It’s quiet thinking time with a steering wheel.

So, which one are you?

There isn’t a “best” answer here.

The playlist person isn’t automatically calmer. The silent rager isn’t automatically impatient. The storyteller isn’t necessarily more social, and the self-talker isn’t necessarily an introvert.

What makes these little choices interesting is that our everyday habits often reflect how we naturally cope with situations we can’t immediately change.

And traffic is a perfect example: you can’t make the cars disappear, so your brain has to decide what to do with the waiting.

Now be honest…

Which one did you pick first?
